OUGD603 | DBA - Meeting 2 and Personal research

During the second meeting, the idea previously discussed was evaluated in more depth. This refined the idea to the following -
  • A coffee/tea alternative for those who don't like the drinks but want an energy boost that these drinks provide, as well as the other social associations.
  • Option for an evening product similar to hot chocolate - used to relax and unwind in the evening as well as aiding sleep.
  • A third product would achieve/be marketed as a secondary effect of coffee, taken in the day, such as a motivation boost, mood boost etc (more research required).
  • Primarily sachet form, can be drank hot or cold. Can also be put into food - opening up the opportunity for recipe books.
  • Primary target - students trying to get through exams and deadlines, and professionals in high stress jobs. However, the products would apply to non-coffee and tea drinkers everywhere.
  • Brand personality/identity/values (initial thoughts) - a homely, warm authentic brand will be most appropriate as it communicates the feelings achieved by hot drinks and comfort, but also evokes a trustworthy feel, which is required for nootropics which consumers may be unsure about.
PERSONAL RESEARCH

Each group member was assigned a product to conduct research into for efficiency. I conducted research into the possibilities for the third product that offers secondary effects of coffee.

Findings -

I was able to find several nootropics options for our products. I also sourced a website that filters nootropics by effect which meant that the required nootropic for each of our products could be found more easily. I was also able to analyse these to consider the side effects and how this might affect the product range e.g. could you take all 3 in one day?
Amphetamine (Adderall)
Big Pharma has recommended amphetamine (Adderall) for ADHD sufferers for years now. It’s also popular on college campuses around exam time. Too bad, because there are much better choices.
Amphetamine has substantial risks. In healthy adults, it improves attention, focus, motivation to work, and short-term memory, all by increasing dopamine and norepinephrine release in your prefrontal cortex [11,12]. Amphetamine also decreases fatigue, but it makes you jittery and can increase anxiety. L-theanine
L-theanine is a major component of black and green tea. On its own, theanine promotes relaxation [14], alertness, and arousal [15].
Theanine also works synergistically with caffeine. Together, the two increase reaction time, memory, and mental endurance [16]

I also conducted research into how coffee affects the body to see what nootropics could replicate this and what affects people may be looking for....
